Rice plays a central role in global food culture: from Jambalaya to Jollof, Pilaf to Paella, different varieties of rice are grown and enjoyed all around the world.
But it's also a vital food. Not only is rice a staple for more than 3 billion people, the rice value chain provides a livelihood for hundreds of millions of smallholder growers around the world.
THE OPPORTUNITY
It’s a little-known fact that rice is the second largest emitter of CO2-equivalent (“CO2e”) emissions from the Food Industy. Only beef has a larger global climate footprint.
But advances in farming methods have been shown to reduce the CO2e emissions from paddy fields by as much as 70%.
So there's an opportunity for this incredible ingredient to help fight climate change.
WHAT WE'RE DOING
We source 100% of our rice from growers that are certified to industry-leading sustainable farming standards.
We give 1% of our revenue to help fund the training required for more smallholders growers to learn and benefit from low impact farming methods.
And we're raising awareness of how rice can be part of the climate solution, to help build the demand that will influence the wider rice industry.
OUR FOOTPRINT
That's why in 2026 we asked Foodsteps – an independent food sustainability company – to calculate the climate footprint of our dry rice products, using primary data from our own supply chain wherever possible.
We publish the results on our packaging because we think they're a really important part of our rice - just like it's nutritional value or origin.
